Twenty years after the Black Mage empire of Queen Brahne, Treno still looked like it had been hit by fire in some places, despite never being attacked. The noble and peasant game still plagued the town, with beautiful buildings placed over the run-down shacks and shelters which could fall apart at any second.
The Drinking Pit was one of Treno's many taverns, open to any who wished to have a beverage and some banter. It had a simple bar with a large and burly male bartender, as well as several wooden tables and chairs.
One of the customers was a fairly tall, fit, light brown cat demihuman. He was keeping largely to himself for the time being, often glancing round the bar and at the door, waiting for someone.

The door opened and a female red mage entered, her eyes weary from travelling. She looked around 16 years old and wore the typical outfit a red mage would wear, her green hair curling slightly at the edges by her neck. She looked around the tavern with a slightly absent look on her face, then saw an empty stool by the bar. She promptly sat onto it and waited for the barman to serve her.

The bartender quickly made his way to the new customer.
"Hi, what can I get ya?"

The red mage smiled shortly at him.
"I'll have a root beer on the rocks, please." she said. The bartender eyed her over to evaluate her age, then shrugged.

The bartender quickly prepared the mage's beverage and made the exchange of gil with nothing more than a "There you go, thanks" as he did so.
Dominic had seen the new customer and decided he should try and invite the mage to his table with a friendly grin and a modest hand gesture at one of the open chairs at his table.

Within seconds, one could faintly hear from outside the rhythm of music, coming from some kind of string instrument. It was gentle, and one who knew their national anthems in Gaia would know this was the Burmecia one (OOC: copy and paste this into something like the Open URL command in Windows Media Player: http://fftjrc_2.tripod.com/ff9mids/ff9burmecia.mid). Waltzing through into the tavern was the source of the music: a Burmecian with greasy-looking slicked-down black hair, who was playing a small harp.
Tied around this Burmecian's head was a red headband, and he wore a red vest with a black undershirt, torn at the left sleeve. On his left arm was a pauldron, a black-and-grey elbow pad, and a black tanned archery brace. He also wore jean shorts with the left leg resewn back on and black leggings. There were five rings on him, silver with an opal in each one: one each on his left and right index finger, one each on his most inward toe, and one on his right ear; an earring. Finally, a reddish card-box was around his waist, tied on with a string.
This very unusual-looking rat hopped up onto a chair closest to the counter, ending his small concert of one. "Hey, my good man", he said to the bartender, "you got some good cold beer?"

The red mage saw the demihuman's gesture and after pondering for a minute she decided to take her drink to where he pointed to. She sat down and turned to him, "Thanks, that stool was pretty hard." she winced as she tried to make herself comfortable on the wooden seat.

"You're welcome. I'm just glad I found someone to talk to." The brown cat answered, broadening his smile a little. "So what's your name?"
Meanwhile, the bartender quickly served up the customer's cold beer with his usual friendly tone.

"Me? My name's Elesa Wildern. You?" she asked her new acquaintance as she sipped her ice cold root beer.

"You can call me Darkmane." The cat replied. "So what's a young lady like you doing in Treno? It's dangerous for a young woman to be strolling around by herself around here."

"Ah. Thanks, pal", said the Burmecian, who then took a rather large gulp of the beer out of his cup. Shaking his head from the taste, the rat thus replied, "Hoo! Not too bad. A couple more thanks yer way".
Pulling a sack of coins from his shorts, the rodent drew around 10 Gil and set it on the table. After that, he simply put his harp on the counter and began to preoccupy his time with a game of Solitare, drawn from the deck of cards on him.

Elesa arched a small eyebrow at the mysterious name of Darkmane, but thought nothing more as he asked of her being here. "Aha, well, I belong to a travelling band of mages. We've stopped off in Treno as this is our last location. Tonight's our last night before we return to Lindblum and stay there for a while." she said fluidly, as if she said it to everyone she met.

"Ah, well it's nice to hear that you have some friends round to watch your back." Darkmane replied.
The cat broke eye contact with Elesa for a moment, and in doing so he noticed a Burmecian playing with a deck of cards and his eyes lit up. He focused his attention back on the mage, an eager grin on his face.
"Say, you wanna ask that Burmecian if he wants to play a few card games with us?" Darkmane asked, nodding his head once towards the bar to signal who he was talking about.

Elesa turned to see what Darkmane was talking about. "Hmmm....he looks like a pro...I don't really mind, the more the merrier right?" she said with a smile.

"Right!" Darkmane added happily, before standing up from the table. He strode up to the bar and leaned on it in clear view of the Burmecian.
"Say, you wanna play a few card games with me and that lady over there?" He nodded his head towards Elesa to point out where he meant. "It'll be more fun than playing by yourself, I would think."

The Burmecian turned around at the voice. A brown-furred demihuman stood close. He had noticed this person walking in, but did not really take his company to heart. The rat eyed him for a second or two, and thinking to himself replied, "Sure! Why not?"
The rodent packed his cards up, and slipped them back into his box. "Th' name is Mack, by the way". Assessing no one would steal his harp, he left it on the bar counter and strolled on over to the table where the mage and cat were sitting, one hand lifting his beerstien. "And who do I have the honor of meeting?"

"I'm Darkmane, and this is Elesa." The cat replied, sitting himself back at the table. "So what shall we play, a few rounds of poker?"
Meanwhile, a ginger cat demi-human appeared from a room behind the bar, dressed in a standard black bartender uniform. He picked up a few used glasses from some empty tables before talking to a group of people at one of the tables.

Elesa nodded towards Mack with a smile on her face in acknowledgement. She looked at Darkmane as he asked what game to play.
"Hmm...I don't mind if you two play poker, see I haven't really played that much. My big bro still needs to teach me some things." she said feeling slightly crestfallen at not being as knowledgable as she'd like to.

"Hmm, poker sounds alright", said Mack as he set down his beer and shuffled his card deck. "Ah, don't worry too much about not knowin' how to play, my fair madam Elesa", he said with charisma. "If you wanted, I could teach ya, or you can figure it out and join after seein' a few hands".
Mack passed five cards to Darkmane, and then five cards to himself. Looking down, he saw he had a pair of 7's... a Heart and a Spade, to be honest. "Alrighty, then, Darkmane! Think you got enough to win, or do you want to fold?"

Darkmane picked up the hand Mack had dealt him, and saw he had a pair of sixes, a club and a spade.
"Yeah, I've got enough to win." He answered, he took the other three cards is his hand: a seven of clubs, a two of hearts and a five of diamonds and put them face down on the table and slided them back towards Mack.
Meanwhile, the ginger cat demi-human finished talking to the people at the table and moved to another, engaging the people there in conversation.
