I don't want to go into too much detail, simply because I'm over excited as it is, and don't want to fudge anything up... Ok...
So, Friday, I got called in through my work to go on-location at a software developer who does some imaging and transitional (NTSC-J-NTSC-US) work for Japanese developers. Didn't expect much real work, usually just a few mice-eaten network cables here and there and its done.
I arrived and got shown the crawl spaces and duct work in the office, and began work, I was working in a business unit manager's office when the guy there started to talk to me, at first it was pretty obnoxious but we got into the subject of PS1 disc imaging when I asked what it was they did. He mentioned that they did most of the transition for Square-Enix (Then Squaresoft) on the Final Fantasy series before its swap-over to the PS2 Format, and that they were doing the Transitions for the Blueray discs for the PS3 now. I mentioned that IX was still my favorite of the series, and he decided to key me into something interesting.
Square has appointed Nobuaki Komoto as their new lead director for the Final Fantasy Series, if you weren't aware before now, he was the one who directed Final Fantasy IX and is a big proponent for the old ATB System, he is actively pushing very hard that, after FFXIV, he will lead a FFIX-II development team. SE is already accepting bids from the company for the transitional services, although this isn't a guarantee that it will happen.

Also, I'm doing some Data Mining over the next few days, who knows what I'll find, I KNOW I saw an interview from last month where one of the Designers hinted at interest in a IX sequel, and there has been a release of a Final Fantasy IV sequel in Japan, so I think chances are good that something is cooking in that big Japanese kitchen... EDIT: Of course, moments after I post, I find it again: The article didn't mean anything to me at the time, but now I'm wondering... uk.ps3.ign.com/articles/980/980580p1.htmlIGN: Of all the Final Fantasy games, which one would you like to work on a sequel for? Takeshi Arakawa: FFIX. I was involved in the production; I expressed my ideas, but I also had quite a hard time in the process. And some of the characters look really... fanciable.

Yay! This is brilliant news! Let's just hope it's as awesome as the original and doesn't end up like X-2...

This is awesome news, hopefully, with FFIX's 10th anniversary coming up, we'll see an official announcement soon.

That's the exact thing I was thinking, and the only reason I really decided to look into it, I'm hoping we'll see something awesome by 2011...
Edit:
And Its not my ability to contact people, its my ability to accept a pretty crappy job for the time being whilst I apply for a better one in Network Administrating... Considering moving to Taiwan or Japan if the market here doesn't improve within 4 years, as I got a few offers there.

Well this is some good news. You just got some inside information. And that is very encouraging. Hopefully we will get something good. And maybe freya will be the main charactor. Well I guess we all live in hope XD. But it's amazing what you can find out.

(The Cleyra incident drew too many parallels to WWII bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and turned off a lot of those players.)

Long live rule 34. Well, I shall live in hope that they have Freya in it in all her boosted CG-ed uber-special effect gloriness. :3 And hey, if they have cutscenes like the ending of Crisis Core for the PSP, think of what they could have for FFIX

*does victory dance all over the place* It'd be awesome! And hey I liked X-2! But what if they do like they did in Fable 2 and start it hundreds of years after IX finished?

Actually, I kind of like that idea. If they set it immediately after the events of FFIX, Burmecia would probably still be in a devastated condition. If they set it a hundred years after though, Burmecia might have become a world power again, and maybe Cleyra will have been restored too. I've always fancied the idea of the sequel to FFIX involving Burmecia industrializing and becoming nationalistic like Germany after the first World War, and going all Skaven, complete with flamethrowers and Gatling guns, on Alexandria.
