Okay, since this got some interesting remarks in the CIT, I reckon this deserves it's own thread.
I'll kick off by asking if any of you guys have read or seen "Love Hina" by Ken Akamatsu. My favourite character is Motoko Aoyama, and I'll explain my reasoning once I get a reply or two.

Hehehe lemme guess: Motoko reminds you of Freya? XD Thinking about it, they are very similar...and can both kick butt! I've read up to v 8 of it so far ^^' Of course, you don't need to know what my fave anime/manga is! If you do, then pay attention in class more time >(

Mel's favourite manga: Fruits Basket Mel's favourite character: YUKI! *Insert fangirl squeal here* Rob's favourite character: Kyo.
And I find the similarities between Aaya and Kuja to be quite frightening...

My favourite anime: FMA, Death Note, Escaflowne, Tokyo Mew Mew, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Kinnikuman/Kinnikuman Nisei, Outlaw Star, Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge, One Piece, Hellsing, Di Gi Charat, Damekko Doubutsu, Fruits Basket, Fighting Foodons, early Digimon
My favourite anime movies: Conqueror of Shambala, Spirited Away, Animal Crossing, The Cat Returns, Escaflowne, KiKi's Delivery Service, My Neighbour Totoro, Pokemon 6, Castle in the Sky, InuYasha 2
As for the question about Love Hina, yes, I've watched and read Love Hina, and it's one of the worst pieces of animated garbage I've ever had the misfortune of sitting through.

Wow, out of all those AJ's listed, I've only read Fruits Basket. I haven't even heard of a lot of them.
Other manga I have read: Dragonball & Dragonball Z, Yu-gi-oh! (The original, most of Duelist and Millenium world), Kingdom Hearts, Elemental Gelade (1st volume), A.I Love You and the first four volumes of Negima!
I'd also like to see at least one reason why AJ dislikes Love Hina so much...and I can say very confidently that it is not the worst piece of animation ever. Worst english dub, possibly.

Because there's nudity and panty shots every couple of minutes for no real reason {in the manga it's every five pages}, it has a sad excuse for a plot, every character except Motoko is completely one-dimensional, the lead character is a complete loser, and the situations in the show are totally unbelievable. It's basically yet another crappy harem show made to make otaku think women are incredibly easy to get.
In fact, maybe I can send you my review of it, to elaborate a bit more.
And actually, I only said it's one of the worst. There is actually an anime I hate more than Love Hina, as well as several non-Japanese animated shows. Also, as much as I hate the show, I have to admit both versions have surprisingly good actors. Sad, really, that such talent was wasted on a show like Love Hina.

FINALLY! Someone who remembers Season 0!
I agree, Season 0 was awesome. ^w^
On a random note, now that it came to my mind...
I've always loved Outlaw Star, but there were always two things that I had a problem with: the constant removal of references to death in the original run {yet, strangely enough, they still allowed nudity, drinking, and use of words as bad as "sh*t"}, and the fact that Aisha's name was mispronounced in both versions of the show.
Of course, once I get the uncut Outlaw Star box set, I won't have to worry about the first problem anymore. XD {Plus I'll finally be able to see the infamous Episode 23}

As for Love Hina, I enjoy it! If you take away the dodgy stuff it actually has a cute romance story *^^* Well, first off, it's hard to look past the excessive fanservice when it's forced into your face at every turn. I honestly don't understand why it's needed anyway. Fanservice is only fun when it's once in a while, or if it's something very small that most people wouldn't actually notice the first time. Second, I don't see much of a cute romance story, to be honest--I see another reinforcement of a bad otaku myth, peppered with ecchi fanservice garbage. The overall message presented to guys by this series is that even if you're a complete loser, if you surround yourself with hot underage girls you'll suddenly be the object of their affection AND somehow grow a brain. Heck, in the end, Keitaro doesn't even gain his own personality. He just becomes a clone of the guy Naru once had the hots for, and then she ends up falling in love with him anyway because of it. Just for that, I think they deserve each other. On a different note, Mel, I'm now very jealous of you--where did you manage to get the original manga that The Cat Returns was based on? OwO

You are using "forced into my face" as a synonym for "being exposed to it". Switching the vocabulary doesn't change the essence of your complaint. If you don't want to see scantly-clad girls in anime, then don't watch shows where it's perfectly acceptable.

I don't recall saying "my". I used the collective "your". I was talking about everyone, not just me.
Point is it's completely unnecessary. There is absolutely no need for that much fanservice, unless they're actually trying to set the record for "Dirtiest Non-Hentai Anime". Love Hina really does force the fanservice quite a bit, to the point where the story seems unable to progress without it. Do we really need a dozen pantyshots and at least half a dozen pairs of gigantic naked boobs in every single episode? No.
It's not that I don't want to see it at all--it's that I don't want to see it every two minutes/five pages in every episode/volume.
Then again, I guess I should keep in mind that Love Hina was in fact originally intended for young Japanese otaku who couldn't get a girlfriend if their lives depended on it.

Wait, wait, wait, let me see if I'm reading this right.
You want teen-rated romantic comedies not to rely on dirty jokes and other graphic forms of innuendo for their main source of humor?
My point being is that you're going to be exposed to a lot of material that's relevant to the genre in question. In action shows, you're going to see a lot of fighting. In horror, you're going to see a lot of bloodshed. I'm pretty sure you know what's to be expected in Romance and the like.
I'm going to assume that, given the way you're ranting about Love Hina, it sounds like it's got a sense of humor similar to that of American Pie, or Austin powers. In other words, a romantic comedy with adult humor.

Except that Austin Powers is a movie that knows it's ridiculous and crude, rather than a 26-episode TV series trying to take itself semi-seriously, and it's actually funny most of the time.
And last time I checked, a romance show/movie can easily be just that without having excessive fanservice and no redeeming story whatsoever. I'd probably have a little more respect for this if it were actually a hentai or something. But it's not.
Y'know what else? I actually went into Love Hina really wanting to like it. So many people claim to enjoy it, so it HAD to have some redeeming qualities, right? Nope. Turns out it didn't.
Anyway... I don't want this to turn into some huge fight. I'm sorry if my opinion offends or confuses anyone, for whatever reason, but it's just my opinion.
And before anyone goes at me with cries of "How dare you judge my favourite anime, you should see more than one episode, etc, etc, etc...", please realize that I actually did. I saw the whole thing. I even picked up several volumes of the manga to read through to see if it was better than what was presented in animated form. I'm all about giving things a fair shot, but Love Hina failed in my books.

Alright, but don't get upset if I ask Mel's opinion on the volumes she has read and if we decide to talk about Love Hina in the thread. This is what the thread is for, not for attacking manga series and their fan bases.
Anyway, I take it that Yu-gi-oh! Season 0 was the anime season based on the original Yu-gi-oh! manga. I'm not sure what changes they made to the anime from the manga. Also, which season was Millenium World covered in? Season 5?

This is what the thread is for, not for attacking manga series and their fan bases. I wouldn't exactly say I "attacked" Love Hina. I'll admit harshly criticized it, but I at least watched more than one episode before judging it, and brought up perfectly valid points--namely that it has way too much fanservice, the characters are one-dimensional, and the message of the show is quite honestly very warped. Correct. That was the season 4Kids refused to dub, because they wanted to skip right to the l33t children's trading card action. On a last random note about Love Hina that just came to mind... One other thing I never liked about it was how two of its main characters were, by Ken Akamatsu's own admission, essentially ripoffs of pre-existing characters. That didn't exactly score it any originality points in my books.

Dude, if you want people to respect your opinion a bit more, you need to drop the pseudo-aggressive attitude and the passive name calling (i.e. All japanese otakus are horny preteens with no social lives), and you need to make sure that your points are consistent and that you have the necessary sources to back them up with. I know it sounds a bit harsh in me saying this, but each time you argue in an overly aggressive manner, you lose credibility. You can't turn around and claim that your opinion is just that - an opinion, and people will call out to you on it. It shows that you can't counterargue your point very well, and it reflects poorly on you.
If you want to become more respectable at debating, you need to show that you can argue in a calm, rational manner, and focus more on pointing out logical fallacies and less on throwing out insults. It's a skill that needs to be practiced, but one that's worth learning. :)
(I know, I'm a bit late in saying this, but Robbo butted in whilst I was typing - that, and I'm in the middle of watching a film, so excuse me for this little bit of topic hijacking >.>)

Actually, it's true that Japanese otaku have no social lives. That's what the label "otaku" means. It's not Japanese for "nerd", and it's not Japanese for "anime fan". It's a word for someone so obsessed with their hobby {any hobby, not just anime/manga} that they have no social life and eventually become a danger to their own physical and mental health. Sometimes they even become a danger to the safety of others, like Tsutomu Miyazaki did in the late 80's. It's also worth noting that, contrary to popular western otaku belief, the Japanese actually greatly dislike their country's otaku, which is why otaku are often made fun of in mainstream Japanese media. And most otaku aren't preteens, either. Most of them are between 15 and 35 years old.
And I'd say I have sources to back up what I'm saying about the show--namely the fact that I watched the entire thing. The show itself is my source.
I wouldn't say I'm being overly aggressive either. If I am sounding that way, I apologize, because it's certainly not intentional.

Sheesh, I try and make a legitimate thread about manga and anime and AJ has derailed it completely with consistent criticism of Love Hina and now Otaku, which has no relevance to this thread whatsoever, unless there is a manga series about an Otaku that I haven't heard of.
Can we please get back to talking about Yu-gi-oh!? Or Fruits Basket? What was changed in Season 0 in comparison to the manga? And has anyone seen the Duelist lingo video that quickly shows all of the overused phrases in the 4kids Yu-gi-oh! anime? Or the Abridged series' latest episodes?
