I've decided to go on one tomorrow. I finally got my new camera, and since I don't have work in the morning I plan to tank up and head out. Where? To random points on a map. I've planned my route to bring me back home in time for my therapy appointment at 2pm, assuming I leave home at about 8am. It's about four hours (and 200 mi, or 320km) of driving on mostly rural roads on a day when storms are supposed to be out and about, skirting lakes, grasslands, prairie, and a multitude of creeks. Before I go, I'm going to stop at Wal-Mart and snap up a 1GB SD card for $15.
I expect to return with some interesting pictures; or if nothing else, an interesting day cruising through some relatively remote areas. I'll have my detailed maps with me, of course, in case one of the main roads I'll be going on gets washed out (as happened last time it rained 'round here).
EDIT:
1. Haslet (starting location) 2. Slidell 3. Forestburg 4. Alvord (in LBJ National Grasslands) 5. Chico 6. Runaway Bay 7. Mineral Wells State Park 8. Azle 9. Briar 10. Haslet

Looks like you want to put a couple of miles on your car and rev round the countryside. I hope you have some better weather than what you've had recently when you go. Enjoy yourself!

I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but leave a few extra hours for lunch, getting lost, gas station stops, and so on.
Myself, I hate to do anything like that when I have a committment later in the day--I can't enjoy myself in anything when I'm feeling rushed.

I wound up being behind the wheel for some six hours - MapQuest was wrong, and the rural farm roads aren't always labeled. =P Anyhow, I ended up with so much stuff, that I'll have to post it in sections. The last shall be first: a bit of garage revving after getting home. Mostly I just wanted to hear how it sounded recorded, and it doesn't sound as good as in person. I know, it's just a 2.2L econo-engine, but eh. =P This is a close-up of a scene I also shot a short video of: five VW Beetles, painted like ladybugs, sitting out in a field for no apparent reason. Might be a sort of nod to Cadillac Ranch up in Amarillo, though. A cactus - I love my camera's close-up mode! The focus isn't perfect, but it's pretty durn good. Some of these cacti had inch-long spines that cut my leg a couple times due to being hidden in the tall grass by the side of the road, where I got many of these close-up shots. This particular one is pretty tame. Me going a little bit loony from too much time on lonely farm roads. =P In case you can't understand what I'm saying there, when I said "Haha, I totally lied" it's in reference to another clip I recorded where I basically babbled for a few minutes and then said I was turning the camera off. Anyhoo, I had to make a u-turn, and near the top of the hill there was very little distance for someone coming OVER the hill to slow down. So I had to floor it in case someone came over just as I pulled onto the road. Tower in the clouds. I really like this picture. I forget where, but as I passed this structure I was struck by how incredibly big it was. The sense of scale I got from passing by it at about 70mph (112kph) is hard to capture, but I think you can tell it's tall from the way the tip of it is partly obscured by clouds. I figure it's probably 1,000 feet tall, maybe more - btw, that's not terribly uncommon for long-range radio towers. Or it might've been for something else, I guess. More to come! But I have to reduce their size for upload, and the video clips take FAR longer to upload than to watch, but I'll get 'em up. =P Nothing TOO interesting there, most of the good stuff this time is pics, but I'll put 'em up anyhow.

Good photos, I haven't watched the videos as this com has no sound.... (We need a sad Freya!) That cactus looks like half of a Venus fly trap! But that's a brilliant close up shot. You really should get into photography! Those five matching cars are just strange...
