This is a work-in-progress!
There are generally two options for displaying written work here at the shrine: posting and submitting. Posting means just making a topic here in the Stories forum--it's not just stories, of course. Short essays, poetry, and other things go here. Submitting will probably mean sending the stories to Fanfiction.net or another type of site--the Shrine is updated only rarely these days and so that part of this ruleset is deprecated for the time being.
Posting a story here on the forum:
Generally, short (a page or two) story, poem, or other short work (essays, etc.) can be posted directly here.
Guidelines:
1) Lemons/pr0nz and graphic content: There will be no such works on this forum. No links, no posting, no nothing. If the story tells us just how sticky something is, we don't want it. This is a family-oriented sort of site. Fics with excessive violence or highly vulgar language ("graphic content" other than sexual) may also not be acceptable to post. Use your judgment. Posting pornographic or lewd stories here will result in the removal of the story and disciplinary action. Posting something excessively graphic will likely result in removal of the work.
2) Highly suggestive content: Don't try the old wink-wink nudge-nudge. As a matter of taste, don't just delete out the naughty bits and leave all the leadup--if you're too graphic, minds will fill in the details. Please, just use your best judgment here. If you're still not sure, then don't post it. Instead, you should submit it, telling us *exactly* what part you're worried about. Mods will look it over and get back to you. Posting works with excessive suggestive content will result in lots of eye-rolling and fake gagging noises, and possibly removal pending editing.
3) Formatting: Remember that this is an internet forum. Special formatting tends to break it, so if you have a bunch of Japanese characters or bold text or something you will want to format it carefully and preview at least once before posting it.
4) Long works: As noted above, don't post really long works here. If it has chapters that are more than a few pages long, it's probably too long to post, unless you break it up into managable chunks. It's probably better for long works to go to fanfiction.net.
5) Poetry: All poetry is best served by posting.
6) Posting another author's work: This should go without saying, but don't post works (stories, essays, poetry, etc.) that you didn't write. It's both discourteous and plagiaristic. Even if you have permission from the author, it's better if the author herself signs up for the board and posts it--that way, we have a new member and a new story, and there's no risk of angry authors. Claiming the work of others as your own will result in removal of the story and a ban.
Submitting to the shrine:
(Note that this section is largely out-of-date and will continue to be so until the Shrine is regularly updated once again.)
SUBMIT. YOUR PUNY WILL CANNOT STAND AGAINST OUR WRATH.
Kidding! You can submit longer fan fiction to the shrine in order to have it linked-to from the Fiction section. Really, really short works you should probably just post. Really, really long works of fiction are probably better served by a fanfiction.net account. Still, if you're unsure, send it along to an Admin.
Guidelines:
1) Pr0n: No pr0n. Same as above. Submitting flagrantly pornographic material is bad--don't do it.
2) Graphic content: Graphic content should be limited. Generally, the same rules apply as mentioned in (1) above. Try not to be terribly explicit with intimate settings, the contents of the body cavity, or clever nezumi slang for "your mother." The rules may have slightly more leeway for submissions as opposed to postings since the former can be put behind a warning, whereas anyone can click on the latter--but a post with a warning *does not* get around any of the rules mentioned in the posting section above.
3) Formatting: Submit in HTML format if you can. Please preview the work in both Internet Explorer and Firefox, if possible, before submitting. Other acceptable formats are Notepad (.txt) and Works. Saving in .txt format will strip your formatting, including tabs, so if your document is long or properly indented you probably won't want to go with that option. If you can't make any of these types of document, it's probably easier all around to obtain a ff.net account and provide The Boss with a link: ff.net accepts and formats a wide range of electronic document formats.
4) Submitting the work of other authors: The same rules for posting the work of others applies to submitting the work of others: don't. It should not be a problem for an author to submit her work to The Boss without assistance. If you must make other arrangements, please contact a mod or The Boss before sending in the story.
Linking to Stories:
You may freely link to a story of yours that you have posted elsewhere, such as an ff.net account. You might want to give The Boss a link as well so that he can somehow point the shrine to your work.
Please try to avoid linking directly to stories written by others--it's better all around if you link to the page that contains the work, such as the author's main ff.net account or the top page of the author's web site.
The same rules for posting a story apply for linking to one, insofar as content is concerned. Don't link directly to lemons, and try to provide warnings for content that others might find objectionable.
