Wow, was I really the last one to post in this area? Anyway, if you missed the story behind this, I was cleaning out my stuff drawer, and I found this: a partial FFIX fanfic that I wrote when I was in grade 6. As far as I can remember, I was challenging a friend to write a collaborative short story, but he backed out. So what we have here is an un-finished, abandoned piece. Plz excuse any spelling or grammar errors. I cleaned it up a bit, but I didn't want to ruin the original ideas with my currrent style.
So here it is: Ladies and Gentlemen, I give you,
Dragon Knight
I felt the electricity coursing through me. And it hurt! As strong as I am, I still am not invulnerable. As soon as the magically summoned lightning came, it was gone.
“Not bad,” I said
“ . . . but can lightning do this?” I felt the impossible strength shoot me straight upward. High enough that I could almost touch the enchanted mist covering the continent like natural fog. As I adjusted my diamond plated spear, I braced myself for impact. The blow must be close enough to scare him into submission, but not so close as to hurt him badly. As I recovered from the blow of falling from a great height, I looked up. He was smirking at me! He wasn’t as smart as I gave him credit for. He called up the summoning words for Ramuh, the thunder eidolon, but I was quicker.
“SILENTIUM!” I yelled to my opponent. It’s amazing what one word could do; he couldn’t even call up the strongest death spell now! Even as I chanted the incantation for a petrification spell I wondered how a spell could keep one from casting spells. But magic rarely makes sense, and I’m not one of those old fogeys who study that sort of thing.
“The competition is over! Burmecia’s champion wins!” the announcer’s magically enhanced voice echoed all around Lindblum’s arena. “He will continue to the Maiden Sari trapping contest!” I was so overwhelmed that I barely remembered to give my opponent the dignity of being able to walk out of the stadium on his own.
“Ensuna” I whispered, and he instantly continued where he left off in his spell. Since the remedy spell removes most enchantments, the anti-magic spell was gone too. Thankfully, he missed me entirely, and almost set his own hair on fire!
“I give you the dignity of being able to leave under your own power!” I yelled for the audience’s benefit. He graciously accepted my offer to pay for his medical bill. After all, it was only a friendly competition.
“9000 Gil!?!” I bellowed “How can one LITTLE burn cost 9000 Gil?!?:
“What little burn” the medic replied, “that thing covered most of your face! You can’t honestly expect me to do this kind of thing for free?”
“And you don’t expect me to sleep in the gutter! How would it look in the papers? ‘Champion found sleeping under Lindblum’s Daily Press’. If you’re going to charge that much, I’ll take my burn and go somewhere else!” and I stalked out. Unfortunately, that was the only hospital in the city.
“The biggest city on the Mist Continent, and there’s only one hospital!” it was a good thing that I always kept a Remedy in my pocket. “I just hope that heavy javelins are cheaper than a simple healing job,”
“Tell me about it” came a voice from the air cab station behind me.
“Who is that?” I asked the voice “If you want autographs, you’ll have to wait until the next competition like everyone else”
“Come now, Ceris, you can’t always think that you’re the only champion in town. Besides,” the voice said “why would I want my own brother’s signature?”
“Kyle? Is it really you?” I asked
“In the flesh”
“So I’m assuming that you are taking place in the next competition”
“Nah, too much skill for my blood. Besides, I like my privacy”
“Just cheering me on, eh?”
“Actually, that was just a bonus. I’m in town on business”
“Oh,” I said, a little put out “what kind of business?”
“Restoration. I have a group of workers here to pick up supplies for the rebuilding”
“And you’re going all the way back to Burmecia with a bunch of architects! You can’t be serious?”
“Is that so? How much do you want to bet?”
“Sorry, I don’t gamble. But it sounds like you just found yourself an escort”
“This is what you hired me for?!?” I bellowed
