Author's Note: It was told to me that Sarri is too scary to run around with people, and I havn't given indication otherwise that she isn't just a psychopath vampiress ex-dragon knight who likes to throw people around... This should help dissuade it a little.
Darkness swallowed everything for all, the Lindblum guards had been easy enough to slip past, they relied on their torches to see those entering the gates… The storm overhead had blown them out, and they sat in darkness, chatting away, not noticing the figure who strolled into the city, ragged cloak covering a pair of what looked like antique militaria, ancient armor and a tabard displaying two intertwined dragons…
Sarri Taylen had time; night had only fallen upon the lands two hours ago… Her lamp like eyes must have looked eerie to any onlookers; Vampires were not much loved in these lands… At least she had friends in the area, or as close to friends as she had, in this town of airships. The Anvilhead Tavern was a small, ancient looking building, not trashy, but it had a rustic look, not surprising, it had been here as long as Sarri’s considerable memory could remember… Back when it was the only tavern in the tiny town…
She entered to find the usual late night drinkers and shady sorts, but there were also engineers and businessmen and merchants, two musicians sat on the small stage, a harpist and a flutist, playing a slow winding down song that she swore she had heard before… Wandering up to the counter, she leaned against the counter, waiting until she saw the hulking bartender, a human of immense size, come from the back room. He had a scraggly beard, black as soot, with thick hair on his head, a pair of dark blue eyes peered out from two heavy eyebrows…
“My, you’ve grown…” She commented, propping her head up on her hand, behind her, the musicians began the next song, same as the last…
“Do I know you Miss?” He asked gruffly, pulling a glass off the shelf and wiping it down with a rag,
“We met when you were about seven, it has been a while…” She said, “And that isn’t necessary, I don’t drink…” She said, nodding at the glass he had in his hand, “Is Garret still around?”
“My grandfather died twenty three years ago… I only just took over the tavern meself…” He said,
“So Gerald took over the tavern after all…” She said, “Last we spoke he was planning on joining the Guard.”
”Aye, you convinced me not to do that, eh Sarri?” Came a gruff voice, much similar to the Bartender’s. She turned to see an elderly man in his early sixties, he had once been of impressive stature, but time had worn him down, he was thin, and his hair white as snow, a pair of thick spectacles perched on his large squashed nose… “I always wondered when you would come back… You haven’t changed; you look exactly the same as you did…”
“Time has been kind to me…” She laughed, sharing the private joke, she was calm here, “Still the best Tavern in town…” She said, looking around, “Too much ruckus in the others around here…”
“Well, we’ve got a spot for you, windowless room… But what are you doing back here, you seldom come just to visit the family…” He said, leaning on the cane he had been propping himself up with,
“I’m looking for someone who I believe is somewhere in the city…” She said, but Gerald burst out laughing,
“Just as vague as I remember…” He laughed, “But I’m sure we can help you find him…”
”I am loathe to give out his name, but he is a young Burmecian engineer who lives somewhere in the city…”
”There aren’t many of those around…” Gerald said, “I know of one who frequents the Taverns, goes by the name of Dan… He arrived on that big old airship that came into town a month ago… There’s another somewhere in the city, some of the engineers who come in here talk about him, he’s got an entire dockyard working night and day to get some big project completed, they say he’s completely obsessed with whatever they’re in there building…”
“You are just as knowledgeable as you always have been…” She said, committing everything he had said to her memory…
“I don’t suspect I’ll see you again.” He said, throwing her off balance for a moment,
“No, I would think not again, unless fortune changes… But I shall continue to write when I can, as I always have…” She said, watching the fire crackle in the fireplace… She heard a noise and something hit her leg, she looked down to see a child, maybe six, holding a wooden sword…
“That’s Jason, my Grandson… He was supposed to be asleep by now…” Gerald said with a frown… “In the very least, he isn’t supposed to be bothering the patrons…”
Sarri took a knee, smiling at the little child, “Its good to meet you Jason… I’m Sarri…” She said,
“Your eyes glow…” He said, “Are you a monster?”
“Depends on who you ask…” She said, she had gone so long without dealing with children that she had forgotten their innocent honesty… It was a question she had never had to answer before… Nor had she thought of it in her centuries of undeath… “But I was a friend of your grandfather’s grandfather…”
“Wow, you’re old…” he said, pointing the little sword at her like a pointer finger... once again displaying a knack for his brutal honesty…
“There aren’t many who could get away with that…” She said, poking him in the side with her long finger, he giggled, obviously ticklish, “But I’ll let you off easy this time…” She said poking him again before he ran off, and towards the stairs, laughing, he stopped at the foot of the stairs,
“Night night old lady!” he said, waving before running up the stairs... Sarri stood, facing Gerald,
”Reminds me of someone else…” She said,
”I have no idea who you’re talking about…” He said, turning, “Follow me, lets get your room squared away, then we’ll work on this engineer you’re looking for…” He said…
