It has been decided that, rather than update the original character's thread, I'm going to post all my works into a single thread. To start off with, I've been working on a couple of headshots for Declan, which you can find here. As you can see, I've been testing out some mechanical pencils I've bought recently - first I started my initial sketch with a 4B pencil, then went over most of the lines with a 6B pencil. Any suggestions? Tips?

Hope it helps. =P "I say Serylis, 'tis a jolly good day for freshly decapitated fanboys!" =P All silliness aside, I appreciate thet notes you've made and may consider them in future revisions of this piece. Thanks again. - Declan

Those are very good Dec! ^^ I use mechanical pencils all the time now = NO SHARPENING WOES! > My only tip would be with the shoulder width, seeing as he is a grown up male he'd have broader shoulders. However since it's not a full/half body I suppose it doesn't matter too much ^^' I've based Declan on Edward Elric from FMA, structure wise - that is, a shonen-manga type character with effeminate looks. But, now that you mention it, I could play around with shoulder width and see which suits him best. Thanks for that :3 - Declan

Not bad Dec, that's a good headshot, but your artwork shares a problem with mine, and that of all line artists and sketches:
It's too FLAT!
And I'm being too harsh. Apart from possibly one or two minor details that Mel and Meeps have pointed out, that looks fine.
Rob, I appreciate the feedback, but could you please elaborate on 'flat'? If you're talking about perspective, could you point out as to why it's flat rather than simply state it? Otherwise, it's just a silly OMG STATING THE OBVIOUS post. Thanks. - Declan

Hey, I'm not the only one to use different shaded pencils. Sweet.
I must say you can do a beter Burmecian fornt view than I (mostly I just have 'em looking downish with a smirk or other facial expression on the side of the head). You also are a lot better at drawing realistically than I. My qualm is that the eyes are a big polygonal, but I'm finding how you did everything else stellar.

After taking some of your advice into account, I reworked the frontal face headshot and came out with this: Suggestive content under the link. Also, man nipples. In addition to redesigning the hair and adding the upper torso, I took the liberty of cleaning it up a bit in Photoshop, by removing all the guidelines and smudge marks. Enjoy.

Hmm, the man-boobs look too straight-edged, and I don't like the double big straight line defining them. The ears are also comprised of three straight lines and don't look natural. Are you using a ruler or something? It makes it look like a diagram rather than a drawing.
Still, this looks pretty good. The only detail I might add would be the odd stray strands of fur off the body in one or two places.

Rob, if you looked closely enough you'd see that he does not use a ruler =P Anyhoo, the anatomy of the shoulders and torso are a good improvement! *claps* It makes him look more masculine good job!

So I take it he doesn't need more steroids, then? =P

Considering that it's a sketch, I think you did a pretty good job defining the muscles. You hit the important ones, it looks like.
I would agree with the comment about the lines looking straight-ish. There's something... slightly inorganic about their straightness. I don't really know to describe it better than that, and since I'm not really an artist I don't know if I can help to fix it.
(I did find, though, back when I sketched, that my best results came when I would use a very fine pencil--something like a 500 or 700 micrometer drafting pencil. You can make some very light lines with them, which helps immensely when shading. Smudging a thin, light pencil mark makes a very nice shade, I'd found.)

This is just a general survey here, as I have a few artistic ideas I want to execute, but can only dedicate myself a small amount of time working on them. Which of my characters would you guys like to see more of, and would want me to draw?
You have a choice of:
Declan Serylis Smaug Edward

I'd like to see you try drawing Edward.

I'm interested in seeing Smaug again, but Edward intrigues me too.

Ah, crap. Tried drawing Edward today, but it didn't come out very well.

Eddy's an interesting guy, lesse him and perhaps Declan too. Hmm... and, also, how bad did your attempt turn out? Is it too sucky to post, or what?

I haven't done anything new that's worthy of showing, but I went back and did some work on an older piece. Here!

I like how the shadows give it a 3d touch! ^^

Whoops, forgot to post here! I coulda sworn I made it here....WHICH ONE OF YOU BACKSTABBERS DELTEATED IT?...Anyways, i'm with Mel, the added shadows does indeed enhance him quite nicely ^^.
The only flaw I see is the collar bone shadow, since its on top of it and not the bottom. Im not trying to be picky, im just trying to be helpful...unless the shadow IS the collar bone. I need glasses if it is then T_T
Shadow inside the hair...Why didn't I think of that!?! I'll be stealing that for my PS threads for now on, MWHAAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHHAHAHAAAA!!!!

Wow, that shading has enchanced your Dec pic quite nicely. Good job. I do think Meep has a point with the collar shadow though.
