Can you give us more information about them, and their role in the adventure?" Toshiyuki Rahans: "The character of Final Fantasy IX is a Moogle. (laughter) Many characters have names taken from Final Fantasy IX. The names of the monsters are the same, since the same designer who created them. Therefore you can see many similarities between the two games." As if I needed more reason to anticipate this awesome looking Wii game.

This reminds me of Crystal Chronicles for the Gamecube, which was pretty rubbish yet also had a lot of FF9 references and monsters...Whoever responsible for the monster design must've got lazy...

Well you do find most of the monsters are in almost every FF game....

I know Square like reusing certain monsters, it's just that Crystal Chronicles pretty much ripped the monster models straight from FF9 and shoved them into the game. Most of the time Square will redesign the monsters at least, even if they are similar.

Um... you DO realize that Toshiyuki Itahana is the lead designer for both FFIX and the Crystal Chronicles mini-series, right?

And? He just looked at the FF9 monster designs and went "Yeah, these'll be good, let's just use these again". It's still lazy, especially considering that the same designer went to some effort to make every single monster in FF9 have a unique design, something quite rare for a FF game.

Yeah, well, that's beside the point. Every artist has to maintain a level of consistency in style that makes their work stand out from one another, giving it that unique feel. Without it, everyone would end up designing the same thing.
Otherwise, what would be the point in Mr. Itahana designing all his characters and monsters in a different style? It would only eliminate the familiarity in his work and he'd end up losing that unique look that made it stand out in the first place. That would be like Seth McFarlene trying to copy anime instead of sticking to his own style.

I'm not complaining about his style. The bit I don't like is the fact they were all too happy to just reuse monsters straight from FF9 over making more new monsters. In FF we expect to see new worlds and new designs with each game, and we know the designer of 9 is capable of coming up with a variety of new monsters. You really saying you'd be happy with all the FF9 monsters presented to you again in a completely new FF?
That said, I might have overlooked this point if the gameplay of Crystal Chronicles was good. As it is it was just a blatant attempt to get you to use the GBA connection with the Gamecube.

You're trying to justify your dislike for FF:CC by picking at some of the more trivial problems about the game rather than covering the core issues about it. I don't really care at all about issue with the reuse of monsters, since it is not that much of a deal to me. However, I'd like to point out that Square have been recycling sprites for the first THREE games in the series on the NES. So going by your logic, they should've spent more time designing the characters/monsters than on gameplay, correct?
Oh, and there's very little variation between some of the more well-known monsters (tonberries, malboros, behemoths, etc.) throughout the whole series in terms of design in each game, so they should've redesigned them from scratch for each one, no?
Because I haven't seen you apply the same argument to anything else other than CC. It really does sound like you're focusing on trying to attack one game you dislike based on trite information than making a valid point. If you had said, "I really didn't like this game", you'd at least be more credible for that than "This game sucks because it recycled material from FF9".
But if it really bothers you so, you are more than welcome to shoot off an email to Square Enix and demand them to change their monster designs for each FF game from now on. I'm pretty sure they won't mind the extra input from the fans.

You missed my point, I never said that the main reason I disliked CC was because of the recycled monster models. I was just pointing out that just because this new game will feature FF9 monsters and moogles doesn't mean it will be a good game.

...Did you even LOOK at the article that's been linked? Or any information about Crystal Bearers at all?

Yes. It does look more promising but until people start playing the actual game we won't know if it's good. It's not like the developers will point out any flaws or weak points.
