First off, my nephew is back in school now, and my sister is moved back in, so I get a brief reprieve of not being totally absurdly busy. =P Which means I get to do some postings, yippee! =D Hurrah! After much waiting, I finally got a new graphics card to replace the ATI 9250 I had. Y'see, when I'm too beat or depressed to go on the boards, I play Oblivion. My whole comp needs an upgrade, but the GFX card was really killing me. Behold these old screenshots: I had to use the "tlb" console command to get rid of all shadows to make it run acceptably. smg.photobucket.com/albums/v213/lancerzero/?action=view¤t=ScreenShot41.jpgsmg.photobucket.com/albums/v213/lancerzero/?action=view¤t=ScreenShot15.jpgAnd now, behold the difference with my new nVidia GeForce 6200LE! The blood splattered on the crate from where my mage slashed someone up with her dagger! The reflections in the water! smg.photobucket.com/albums/v213/lancerzero/?action=view¤t=ScreenShot42.jpgsmg.photobucket.com/albums/v213/lancerzero/?action=view¤t=ScreenShot45.jpgOooh! And now the weapons are actually shiny, and get blood on them, and I can have grass and trees and distant land, and invisibility actually makes you look invisible . . . . weee!

The Way It's Meant To Be Played!
Nvidia's are good, but i'm more of an ATi fanboy myself. (except they were sold to AMD)
What i have came to find out between those two different brands is that Nvidia processes 3D details faster than ATi, but at a lower quality, while ATi processes 3D details better than nvidia, but at a slower pace.
All in all, Nice card. PCIe or AGP?

Wish I had PCI-e . . . cheaper cards, and they're faster! Naw, it's AGP. 8X, but still AGP. Someday soon I'm gonna upgrade my motherboard, and it'll have a PCI-e slot or four. I'll have to post up more screenshots sometime later. =P

That's pretty awesome. And hurrah, what a coincidence - I've just ordered myself a GeForce 8800 GTX to replace my old crappy dinosaur of an FX 5200. Won't be getting it until the end of the week, sadly.

Hopefully, when my parents get a new computer it will have a great GFX card in so Sims 2 can be just as beautiful ^w^

Make sure they don't get integrated graphics. (then again, i dont know. Integrated graphics have come a long way.) Go for something that LZ got Late 6 series to low 7th series. I currently run the X1900GT (ATi) and before that i had an X700, which could run BF2 on medium-high settings.

My GeForce came in the post today, and tried to set it up, only to find that:
1.) It's too big to fit inside my case, 2.) It requires two six-pin power cables for it to work, 3.) It requires a DVI cable for it to work, 4.) It cannot fit into my current motherboard.
So, now I am forced to upgrade my whole computer (motherboard, CPU, extra RAM, new PSU and possibly extra fans and a case), all just to upgrade my GFX card.

Lancer, I couldn't help but notice that your Oblivion on the old card looks an awful lot like Morrowind Oh man, that really sucks, having to buy everything else new because of the graphics card. Still, you make me feel small, Alexis, since I'm using an FX5200 card. Then again, I'm using an eMachine... one that was outdated in 2003. However, I'm trying to take the next step in computing. I really want to build a PC on Intel's newest chip, due to launch any month now. The trick is, the best chip they offer could very well cost over $1200 alone, which really prevents me from affording the other mandatory parts to go with it. Yes, the chip is spectacular, because it's 8 cores. EIGHT cores. If I can't wait for the price drop, I might have to just settle for a motherboard that can accommodate it while using a smaller (4 cores, GASP!) chip of the same design. The video card and RAM are two cans of worms I still haven't opened.

Bumping an old topic, I upgraded my graphics card recently: from an old X800XL to an X1950 Pro. I wanted the XT model, but the only one I could find was from some brand-x company I hadn't really ever heard of.
In retrospect, the move seems to have been parallel as far as strict performance goes, although now I can do SM3.0 stuff. Still, I would've liked to have seen gains in Oblivion more than just the ability to do HDR--I think my CPU (2.0 GHz) is what's holding me back now. Unfortunately, if I want to upgrade that, I either make an incremental upgrade to a 2.6 GHz Opteron (which probably has some downside other than price that I'm not seeing) or I have to totally replace my motherboard since this new Socket AM2's come about. It's really not a situation I'm happy with, since getting all that crap in there was tough this last time. Given the quality of most PC (and other) games lately, maybe not being able to upgrade isn't too bad of a situation to be in.

Nice, Oni! I am jealous. =P
Wilson: yep, it's your CPU. How much L1 and L2 cache do you have? And your RAM, probably. And quite possibly your motherboard, specifically your FSB and north bridge.
