Hey guys, I'm currently playing through my new Soul Silver game, and I'm currently in Dark Cave on the way to Azalea town. Have any of you guys bought the game yet? What versions did everyone go for? I went for Soul Silver since I played Silver originally and having Lugia and Soul Silver on the cover is much cooler.

Oh that's go-you WHAAA!? I'm messing around in Azalea town still, waiting for a friend to come round with Heart Gold and sort it out so we both get all the starter Pokemon! And I thought I was playing it a lot... ;D Still, the Pokewalker is fun, although thanks to the fact they don't tell you attacks aren't learned and evolutions are ignored I now have a Quilava with no Ember attack...Bugsy is gonna laugh at me...

Pffft you underestimate a true pokefan Rob, James got the game the same day as me and he's like already beaten the Kanto gym leaders xD
and yeaaah I don't use my pokewalker with my main pokemon. For that reason of course.

Sheesh, level 100 Pokemon and the game truly thrashed already? The problem with doing that is the game will be no challenge at all and no-one will want to battle you. And yeah, darn Pokewalker, now I have to check move lists if I wanna level my main Pokemon, which isn't fun. Still, at the moment I'm levelling a Magikarp on the thing. I caught a female Magikarp at level 10, nicknamed it Freya, and now she's kicking ass on the 'walker. I have to laugh at Splash doing a critical hit on wild Pokemon...

Well I've only used the level 100 pokemon for the elite four, every other battle I've used my own lower level pokemon, thankyou.

Oh yeah, I beat Bugsy today. With a Pokemon I least expected would help me. No, Quilava wasn't need, not when the early Wobbufet I got on the Pokewalker countered Scyther's U-turn for "Holy crap that's a lot of damage!" Now I'm in Goldenrod with the dense bimbo Whitney, but before I beat her I have to bring myself to leave Game Corner and the addicting Voltorb game (I only have 80 coins, but I'm determined to find a trick to winning!) and stop riding round Goldenrod on my brand new shiny and "lent" bicycle. Whee! And how has James got Level 100 Pokemon to give you this early? Has he spammed the walker or rare candies or does he really need some sleep and food?

Using rare candies doesn't boost your levels up like proper training does, as your EVs will go down instead of up, so you'll end up with really weak pokemon at level 100 with low stats. They're like steroids, more than anything - all for show, and having none of the results you'd get through proper hard work.
(I _USED_ to abuse the dublicate item trick in the originals and feed my party rare candies, getting everyone up to level 100 - they were all pretty crap fighters, so I had to start again with a fresh batch of pokemon and kept on fighting the Elite Four over and over. The difference is _really_ astounding, they even took down my Mewtwo in a few hits. Shows how much of a difference a small thing really makes.)

We didn't use rare candies, James gave me the pokemon from his Platinum version.

I wonder how the Pokewalker compares to Rare Candies and training in game? I've always known Rare Candies were rubbish, never used them.
I'm also relieved to hear James has level 100s on his Platinum version, I was thinking he had them on Heart Gold already...

Here's some advice against Whitney - use a fighting type Pokemon for her Miltank. Failing that, paralyze twice as it'll auto-heal with a berry, drop it's accuracy and confuse, and prepare for a long-ass fight.
Seriously.

I just tore through Whitney's lackeys, but the haunting memories of the original Silver and that dreaded Miltank is keeping me from challenging Whitney just yet. I know the only fighting Pokemon around is the Machop you can trade for, but my Wooper knows Rock Smash and I am liking that little guy. Only problem is he's male and will likely be steamrolled by Miltank's level. I have a feeling Wobbuffet may have to come to the rescue again. That said, the gym leaders in Soul Silver thus far have had different TMs on their Pokemon which have twisted the battle enough for me to lose once. Has Whitney altered hers or kept the evil move which renders male Pokemon all goggly eyed and drooling over...Miltank of all Pokemon. I shall find out. Also, I got kinda addicted to Voltorb Flip and won myself a Dratini! He's male, so I named him Fratley.

You actually won something on voltorb flip? lol I gave up that when I saw that I wouldn't be doing any fruit machines (damn that gambling ban thing) I used my Machop for Whitney, yes Miltank still did a hefty damage with stomp but I just kept using potions and stuff. Luckily my machop was female so Miltank couldn't use attract (or I'd have just used Quilava dagnabbit) I was expecting it to use rollout like it did in the original silver but I guess I was lucky

Yeah, I'm actually decent at Voltorb Flip. Took me a while to work it out, and read some comments about it, but I now have a basic strategy which lets me get to Voltorb Flip Level 4-5. I was surprised at the lack of slot machines at first, but I sucked at those and Voltorb Flip combines Sudoku and Minesweeper, and still relies on a bit of luck.
I have coins to spare and could go for Sandshrew, but I don't want to spend forever in there. And stuff those TMs for 10000 coins...I'm happy with an early Dratini I can level up through the game thankyou.
You know, I'm curious as to why they make one of toughest gym battles in the game against a dense female like Whitney, who thinks Kurt uses apricots to make Pokeballs and has a gym that is pink and has trainers that look like they belong in a dark alley...At least in the original Silver when I got stuck on Clair, she was cool and made me think I lost to a powerful trainer.

Reporter: Hello, you're a pokemon trainer aren't you? Do you mind if we can get a few words from you?

Wow, I fought Whitney yesterday for the first time and...totally blitzed her. I didn't even need the Machop I trained! Dratini took out Clefairy with Dragon Rage and some Twisters, but nearly fainted because Clefairy mimicked Dragon Rage. I put in Gastly first against Miltank, only for it to get stomped flat. Next up, Wobbuffet. Stomp-Counter! "Oh, poor me!" Stomp-Counter! Miltank fainted! So Whitney cries and I guess it's nice to return the favour after the nightmare she put me through in the original Silver... Now I'm heading to Ecruteak after catching Sudowoodo and trying out the Pokeathlon. That place is quite fun! Also, I evolved my Freya Magikarp to Gyarados, mainly to scare Whitney but it was fun walking with it in the national park... "Freya has found something, would you like to take it?" *Imagines a Gyarados roaring at me for trying to take her...whatever she found* Meep...no...you keep it... And hey Meeps! You'll never guess what I named my rival in this game!

I already beat Morty and I'm now in Olivine city. Morty was easy, but his Gengar was just annoying. I blitzed all the Gastlys and Haunters in the gym with Togetic and Extrasensory, but I did get a scare when Gengar OHKO'ed my Quilava with Shadow ball... I put Togetic against Gengar so Shadow Ball wouldn't work, and most of the turns they were both asleep. Togetic's Yawn and Gengar's hypnosis had me going "Ugh...stop taking a nap and DO something!". I eventually won the battle of attrition.
