And here's that IRC Guide, I said I'd bring over. Feel free to ask questions and the such on here.
IRC Guide
In the internet, one of the most used, efficient and rapid form of communications is called Internet Relay Chat (or IRC for short). Imagine it as a very basic and ancient form of MSN/Skype/etc, and yes, it still is thriving as several platforms that use IRC are free to use.
So you want to get on IRC, to be more active and to immerse yourself in the community? Well, you're in luck as this guide was written for the person that has never used IRC and has no idea how to get on. These are simple, basic instructions for setting a nickname, connecting to a network and channel.
The main platform that a lot of people uses is called mIRC, and there are others but for now mIRC will do nicely to get YOU used to IRC. To get it and start using IRC, you have to download it here:
Once you have downloaded and installed mIRC onto your computer. Run mIRC by double-clicking on the mIRC icon on your desktop or in your Windows Start menu. You should see the Connect window below which you can use to connect to IRC.
Always you'll see these two windows when opening mIRC, it's one of the ways the programmer of mIRC has been making his living but it's not necessary to pay for it so just click on the Continue button twice to get to the following window.
Also take note, in the second nagware window, it's randomized so you might get a 'Exit' command instead of the usual 'Continue' command. Click on Exit and just run mIRC until it shows you the standard command instead of the Exit Command.
Once you've reached the above window, you will need to write your full name, email address, nickname and alternative nickname. Do note that your full name and email address don't have to be real.
Click on servers under the Connect heading on the top left of the window, the window should change to one where it shows you a multitude of folders of IRC servers with the option of adding, deleting, editing, sorting and selecting. Since mIRC doesn't come with the Coldfront server added, click on add and fill the window that pops up like shown below:
Click on OK, click on Select and it'll bring you to the previous window where you wrote your full name, email, nick, etc. Click on connect and you'll connect to the Coldfront server through mIRC.
Once connected, type the following to join our public channel: /join #RoER
If you have any questions about IRC or anything in general, feel free to ask anyone who has @, & or ~ before their names on the Realm of Eternal Rain channel.
