"Hmph, dark path..." Agatha scoffed. "Just like what you're trying to do with my Daniels. I've heard of what you've done; killing an innocent man over an insult. Tell me, is that how you teach your students as well? Instruct them to aim at the throats? Or is there a more sinister way you deal in your bag of tricks?"
"Mother Agatha, please. Let's be reasonable." Daniels put a hand between the two, almost forgetting that she was blind in the first place. "I have been with Sir Frato's students long enough to know they aren't the butchers you may have made them out to be."
"For now, but for how long? How long until they will crave for battle and blood just like their dark master?"
For a moment, the picture of Firebrand got into the white mage's head, who has a strong penchant for such an activity. He quickly ruled her out as an example, instead turning to the Dragon Knight for guidance. "Sir Frato, perhaps you'd like to share stories of your good will and help alleviate her fears. Perhaps that will be an excellent start seeing as you seem to be the main topic of this erm...'dispute'."

Frato frowned as he heard Agatha's retort, and he had to bite his tongue to stop snapping back at her. Like you can talk after trying to murder everyone on the island! You'd have killed that janitor for just being here if I hadn't stopped you!
The dragoon tried to calm himself down, and he was happy to see Daniels try and steer them out of arguing with each other. When the Cleyran suggested he tell stories about his good will he thought for a moment.
"Hrm, what about that time we encountered that assassin in Cleyra?" Frato suggested. He then went to recall the tale of how they received an ominous death threat which he mistakenly thought was for him and how Firebrand was nearly killed, before they finally tracked down the old Cleyran behind it and convinced her to retire from her work as a trained killer and look after her daughter.
Once he'd finished, he then waited to see what Agatha's response would be. See, I'm not the crazed butcher you think I am!

The elder listened quietly while Daniels and Sir Frato made their case, listening to the hybrid's story while having little choice in the matter. There were times when Agatha showed some expressions during it, from a raised eyebrow towards disgust, but she didn't say anything until after he was done.
"Hmph. If you ask me, if he was more competent, he would've stopped the assassin before any harm could've been done. And how absurd of you to let a murderer go without her being punished for her crimes. To think of all the families she's made suffer go without justice."
Daniels shifted awkwardly from her elder's inquiry. "Er, perhaps. But the assassin had a family of her own. Should we punish the assassin, it would mean one more family who's lives had been made to suffer." Then the white mage leaned in towards the Dragon Knight. "And Sir Frato, from the account I've heard of Ms. Firebrand, the assassin was a Vieran, not a cleyran."
"Hmph! This demon seems to be at odds with Cleyrans to think a cleyran would be involved." The woman's eyebrows furrowed in suspicion. "What is it, demon? Jealous of the cleyran's natural beauty when you yourself are cursed with that unnatural body of yours? Or are you just racist of any who's parts you do not have?"
"No, Mother Agatha, it is not like that at all. We have been traveling together for quite some time and he has treated me fairly." Daniels nudged his friend. "Perhaps another tale would help your character. Once more if you please, I'm sure she's warming up, even if she doesn't show it."

Frato's expression soured as he heard Agatha's criticisms. Like you can talk about family suffering. How many families would have lost loved ones if I'd allowed your plan to go off? Hmph!
He was glad to see Daniels trying to stick up for him, although he was then irked as Agatha accused him of being racist to Cleyrans. "You have some nerve to call me a racist after what you tried to do here." Frato scowled.
"Hrm? Another story?" Frato replied as Daniels nudged him. He then thought for a moment, racking his mind for another tale of his good will. "I guess there was that time with Gabriel and Clan Foxtrot."
The hybrid then told the two Cleyrans about how Gabriel had been forced to help Clan Carnicero and Clan Foxtrot in their joint effort to break free some prisoners in order to save her brother. He told how he'd been roped into the mission, and how he'd sabotaged it to protect Gabriel's honour and keep the prisoners safely behind bars. He then finished with how he'd then decided to let Carnicero take him prisoner so they'd let Gabriel walk free after the mission.

Both cleyran's listened to Frato's long tale quietly, Daniels being more interested as he'd only heard the tale from a different source. Surprisingly the elder woman seemed less skeptical of the hybrid's tale than the previous one. Only when the hybrid finished did the two end their silence.
"Hmph. An interesting tale. One a child can easily come up with in his head." It comes to no surprise that Agatha would have a hard time believing it. Looking for input, she pointed herself in Daniel's direction. "Well child? What do you think? Is it genuine? You know I can only believe you, so please tell me the truth."
"You know I have always done so, Mother Agatha." Daniels bowed his head out of respect. "And I do believe we can believe his story to an extend. I have spoken to Lady Gabriel herself and she has recounted the story in similar."
"Hmmm..." The woman mulled over their responses, almost making her look like she was worried. Then she finally turned her head towards the hybrid. "Be that as it is, my fate still rests in your hands. So I'll be asking again; what do you have planned for me?"

Frato felt a little anxious as he looked to see how the pair would react to his tale, particularly as he knew that Daniels wouldn't be completely aware of his motives during the mission. He then frowned slightly as Agatha wondered if he'd just made it up.
Yeesh, I'd be a master story teller if I could make up an epic tale like that on the spot. Sheesh... this woman is so suspicious. You'd think she'd try and appeal to my kind side in her position in the hope I'm merciful rather than rubbing me the wrong way and insulting me.
Thankfully Daniels confirmed his tale to the elder Cleyran, although Frato felt unsure as to just how well his story had been received.
"Uh... well I just planned to keep you detained, at least until we get back to Cleyra." Frato replied. "I want to see just how dangerous you really are. I guess I'm just hoping Daniels can help you see the error in your ways and that you have a change of heart. That said, we still need to get you to Cleyra. Daniels, do you have any idea of how we can get her onto Bern's ship without anyone knowing her identity? There weren't exactly many nezumi coming here for the tournament."

Agatha merely sat there mutely hearing out Frato's explanation. The hybrid was still awkwardly neutral on her judgment, thus making her only more frustrated and suspicious. Meanwhile, Daniels mused over ways to get his mentor safely across the island waters in his head and can only come up with simple solutions.
"Well, best way I can think of is have her wear a robe that covers her body and face. Stuffing her in a container is an option too, but I'd rather not we try such an undignified way. Then again, we don't know how many people really took a notice of her. Mother Agatha, have you seen anyone that co-" The cleyran stopped short, noticing the woman's threatening disapproval look and immediately retracting his statement.
"Oh, yes, er, um, quite. Forgive me, if you please, for my ignorance. Anyways, will that suffice, Sir Frato? Will a robe do? I believe I can grab one form our luggage. I stored a few just in case of emergencies...in the event that Jack or Ms. Firebrand does something embarrasing that would require us to hide ourselves. Um, please don't tell them that."

Urgh... I guess that is the simplest solution, although won't Bern notice we have an extra member in our group? Heh... I'm half tempted to insist we stuff in her in a box for the trip after all that woman has put us through. The hybrid had to suppress a smirk as Agatha threw Daniels a threatening glare for the very idea of putting her in a container.
"Don't worry Daniels, I won't tell them. Hrm... I guess that could work, unless you decided to bring some typical white mage cloaks." Frato replied. "We might need to come up with a name to use for Agatha on the trip though, and perhaps a reason as to why we're going back with an additional person. I'm sure Bern and his crew would notice us bringing an extra passenger back. Just what would we tell them? You found a friend who wanted to move to Cleyra with you?"

"I suppose so. And no, not the typical white mage cloaks. I am aware that this island's inhabitants...dislike of magic before I thought of it."
"Hmph, that's an understatement.." Agatha chimed in sarcastically.
"Yes. Anyways, I am also aware that it was the same attire Mother Agatha and her ilk has worn when they arrived. It wouldn't be wise to wear the same outfit as before, if you don't me omitting the obvious. I guess all we need is a name.."
"If I must. I suppose 'Miriam' will do. It's my middle name. And I'm fine with being named as a 'friend'. Just don't pretend I'm some relative of that demon and we'll get along fluidly."
"Splendid!" Daniels ignored the barb from the cleyran and clapped his hands. "I think we go everything we need than, unless you see another issue with this arrangement. Sir Frato?"

That's good to hear. I kinda expected Daniels to be very wary in what he brought and what he said here when we found out the locals here hate mages.
He then looked a little amused as he heard Agatha's suggestion. That's her middle name? Geez, that's rather fancy. Did she run away from a noble family like Firebrand or something? Oh well, it should do in any case. Grr... she could at least use my name.
"No, that should be fine." Frato replied. "Although Agatha, I hope you know better than to call me demon and other such insults in front of the locals. They don't take kindly to anyone disrespecting their titles. Heck, you should probably just stay quiet whilst we're moving. If you lay low and try to avoid everyone's attention I'm sure we'll get you back to Cleyra safely." Plus it means I won't have to hear you complaining or slandering me.
"Well, I think I'll be alright leaving you two alone for a while. I guess I ought to get some rest before our journey home." The hybrid sighed before making his way to the door. "Unless either of two have anything else you want from me?"

"Hmph." It was the only response gotten for Frato's 'suggestion' from Agatha. Otherwise she has nothing else to say.
"No, I don't think there's anything else to discuss." Daniels shook his head slightly. And thank you for your presence, I believe it has been very productive."
"One act of bravery does not a pure good being make. But I suppose stranger things has happened. I am being tested between my goodwill and my faith, so don't expect any miracles."
"That's alright, mother superior. Patience will tell give us the answer sooner or later. You've taught me that." Daniels then bade goodbye to his hybrid friend. Because of the positive actions the Dragoon has made, he gains 20% for Frato. "Alright, I think that's enough now. Call me if you need anything else."
Frato was out the door and in the living room. And no sooner than he did, Mortimmer was there running towards him with his slimy pet in hands. "Sir Frato! There you are! Quick, take this!" Without asking for permission, the nu mou placed the flan directly on top of his head. The slime did nothing but coat the hybrid's head in cold slimey gel and shiver.
"Well? Anything? Hmm? Yes?" The pudgy scientist had his hands together in a hopeful expression, as if expecting a reaction.

"You're welcome Daniels. I'll see you guys later then." Frato then made his way out of the room. I'm sure they won't try any escapes whilst we're still on Bangaa Island anyway. It'd be suicidal with Agatha's crimes here. Hopefully I've convinced Daniels that I'll treat her fairly and he'll be less inclined to scheme with her. I think I've improved his opinion of me by sitting in with them.
The dragoon was then startled as he saw Mortimmer rushing towards him with his pet flan. Oh no, not the flan again! "Huh? Mortimmer, what are you-eek!" Frato yelped a little as he felt the flan on his head, and he ground his teeth a little as he felt the cool slime pressing on him. "Rrk... it's cold and slimey! Just what are you up to with this anyway? You're not teaching this thing more tricks are you?"

Mortimmer dropped his hands in disappointment, noting his pet's reaction than the hybrid's. "Eh? Nothing? Nothing at all?. The nu mou waited a few seconds more. The flan only continued to soak the dragon knight's hair in it's gel and occasionally jiggle from his movements, otherwise there was no notable effects to note. With a frustrated sigh, he walked up and gently removed his pet flan from the hybrid's head.
"Bah! Perhaps those trolls were simply playing a trick on me. They both claimed to have heard voices when they had my precious put atop their head. I admit even I was skeptical of this, and this only proves me right. Therefore it is still a success! mm-Hmm, yes!"
"Like kupo it is, ya sodding maniac!" Jack the moogle came out of the bathroom wiping his head with a wet towel. "Son of a bitch put that flan on my head and nearly drowned me!"
"But you're okay, aren't you? Besides, I had hoped that fluffy thing on your head would act as an amplifier for my pet's thoughts."
"My pom-pom's no listening device, you loon!"
"Hush! You're scaring my pet!" The flan in his arms seemed to shake a bit. Whether it was stress or the nu mou's movements is unclear. Then Mortimmer took out a pair of fire matches and headed towards Frato. "Now then, since that last test failed, it's time to move on to the next phase of my plan! I've been trying to test a hypothesis ever since that red headed woman caught on fire. Claims to be on fire, yet no burns! perhaps my pet has both anti-fire and flammable properities! This could lead to me helping your weapons and armour becoming greater! But we must tets it at once! So if you don't mind Frato, I'd like you to bow down a bit and show me the area where my pet rested on." He began to strike the matches until ti caught on fire. "Don't worry, judging my our last patient's reaction, you have nothing to worry about...probably. Maybe. hmm, yes! Now bend over."

Urgh... thank goodness that flan is off me. For a second I thought Mortimmer was going to have it tickle me again. Brr!
The hybrid then looked bemused as Jack came out complaining about nearly being drowned by Mortimmer's pet. All this because those trolls thought they heard voices? Hrm... then again... they did think a fish was magic because it had a light on its head.
Frato then looked alarmed as the nu mou approached with a match wanting to test how the flan slime reacted to fire and he tried to back away from the scientist.
"Eh!? Oh hell no!" Frato exclaimed. "I'm not letting you set my head on fire! Why can't you test that on some paper or something?! At least that won't die horribly if your hypothesis is wrong!"

Mortimmer gave a look of surprise at Frato's resistance. "Eh? Why do you hesitate? Do you not want to make good with science? Do you not wish to make your equipment stronger thanks to me and my pet? Besides, paper cannot tell me if it's feeling pain or how much pain it is feeling. I surmise that that red haired whats-her-name was screaming because of panic, not pain! Which is why I want to test the properties of the substances. And it must be a live speciman that can tell me what he or she is feeling. Besides, even if anything goes wrong, you'd only lose your hair and wear a helmet to cover yourself. Yes."
The thought of a bald headed Frato put a big smirk on the moogles face. "Ha ha ha! That'd be hilarious. Don't worry Boss, I hear the monk-type baldness is gaining fashion in Burmecia. You'd fit right in!"
"See!? Even the moogle one agrees!" Mortimmer apparently lacks the ability to sense sarcasm. "Now then, if you wish for me to help your cause a bit more, you'd let me try my test on you. Unless...don't tell me you want me to test it on my poor pet? No! Inconceivable! Cannot condone animal cruelty!" The nu mou proceeded to push his pet flan close to the hybrid's face.
"Even you would agree you wouldn't put such harm to a delicate creature such as this!? Do it for him! Er her. Or...you know what I mean, yes. Do it for science! Unless you have someone else in mind.."

"I'm hesitating because you want to set my head on fire!" Frato replied hotly. "I'll lose a lot more than my hair if that stuff isn't totally fireproof!"
The dragoon then scowled as Jack laughed at the idea of him being bald, before then leaning back as Mortimmer shoved his beloved fan in front of his face. He then gritted his teeth in annoyance.
"Rrgh... fine. You can test it on me, but not on my head!" Frato relented. He then offered his left arm to the nu mou. "Test it on my arm. At least then if I do feel pain I shouldn't die horribly from it."

Mortimmer frowned a bit as Frato tried to offer his arm instead. In the end, he compromised.
"Oh. Very well! I suppose you can't make omelettes without cracking a few chocobo eggs. Hmph! Just let my pet do it's thing and..." Carefully, the self-titled scientist placed his flan onto the hybrid's arm, letting it smother it with it's copious gel body. After a few uncomfortable moments of wiggling in goo and making sure the arm was completely drenched in it's fluids, Mortimmer pulled away and put it back on the safety of his head.
"And now, my favorite part! The Experimentation!" Without worrying about how Frato would feel, the nu mou quickly struck a second match and set it to the hybrid's arm. It's slime instantly took aflame and covered the entirety of the area of Frato's arm where it was slimed, the gel making the flames a bright colour of pink. Although the hybrid can feel the intense heat coming from the dry borders of his flesh, the flesh that has been covered in gel can only feel a mere fraction of the fire's blaze. In fact, it felt quite comfortably warm.
The nu mou's eyes were wide with excitement and anticipation. "Marvelous! Simply marvelous!" He was glazing over the show like a child watching his first circus performance. "No burns so far...well except for the edges. Mmm, delightful, and what a beautiful colour. But tell me, Frato, what do you feel? Anything you'd like to say?"

Frato gritted his teeth a little as he felt the slimy touch of Mortimmer's flan on his skin again. He kept still as the flan smothered his arm in gel, before his eyes widened in fear of the next part of the experiment.
I hope this stuff really is fireproof. Why does that nu mou look so damn eager to set my arm on fire!? I swear he's doing this because he likes making us suffer. Uh oh... WHOA!
The dragoon then looked rather afraid as he saw how quickly the slime set alight and he could feel the warmth on his dry skin. Thankfully the gel coating did seem to protect him from the blaze. Guh... I hope this stuff doesn't burn away and leave me to fry! Yeesh...
"Uh... well, this slime is certainly protecting me" Frato answered. "The fire is a rather comfortable temperature where the slime is. It still feels warm, but not painful." The hybrid then paused, and gave the nu mou an anxious look. "Uh... just how long do you intend to let this burn for?"

"Ha ha excellent!" Mortimmer clapped his with glee. "This proves that not only does my pet has fantastic thermal properties that may revolutionize fire as we know, but it also compounds that fact that I am a genius! Ha ha! Yes!"
"Yo octa-dork, ya heard what the boss said?" The moogle had to shout to get the scientist out of his own delusions of grandeur to get his attention. "Ya want I should knock the kupo out of your head first or ya wait for the fire to give you permission?"
"Hmm? Oh. Yes. Right. Let's see, I have just the..." The nu mou momentarily lapsed and raised an eyebrow to Jack. "What did you call me?"
The moogle shrugged. "Sorry, still trying to think of a good nick name for ya. It's hard when the guy you're giving it to doesn't have the brains to comprehend social norms."
"Bah! You're trivial name calling means nothing to me, especially since I am intellectually beyond caring what others think! Progress before social outcomes, that's what I say...although..." Mortimmer's gaze was kept on the flames of Frato's arm. The fur at the end of the fire started to curl and burn, but he has no interest in them. Only the bright pink flames. "Perhaps we should let this keep going. To see how long it will last and the effect of..."
"Damn it ya dumb kupo, ya asked the Boss to see if he felt any pain or heat and he obliged! If you wanna test for those, ya can just make a candle of of your flan's stupid goo."
Mortimmer gave a annoyed look to Jack, but ultimately frowned and relented. "Oh fine, very well. Just go to the bathroom and wash it off in the sink, it should be fine. Thank you by the way, you've been most helpful. Except for that red headed brat who panicked and almost ruined the reputation of my pet, everything went smoothly. Now if you'll excuse me, I have more experiments to plan.." Mortimmer turned his back and went to his room, humming to himself a cheery tune. This leaves Frato to do what he wishes.

Frato was rather thankful that Jack tried to bring the nu mou's attention back to him, at least until the discussion went to the moogle's attempt at a nickname.
"Never mind what he called you! What about my arm!?" Frato exclaimed in frustration. Urk... I can feel the fur near the edges of the slime starting to singe! Hurry up you stupid scientist! Wha? Oh no, you are not watching me burn any more! What the hell do you think I am? A human torch!?
The hybrid was then relieved to see that Jack had managed to speak some sense in the crazed scientist's mind and the nu mou explained how he could extinguish his arm. Finally! Although I notice he isn't bothering to ensure I'm ok... I'm actually scared as to what he might do to us in the name of science.
"Thanks Jack." Frato said quickly to the moogle before making his way carefully to the bathroom, trying hard not to set anything else on fire. He then entered the bathroom to try and use the sink to wash off the fiery flan slime as Mortimmer suggested.
