Hey again! So this part two of my "Why hasn't ROER updated in two years" post, and it's probably the bigger contribution to the delay, which is why I've made this in a seperate thread. I wanted to keep this one as a big surprise to you guys, but I wanted to share with you anyway because I'm pretty close to releasing it.
First, a bit of backstory!
Back in 2005 I had an idea for a story featuring my OC Declan Tribal. This manifested in several forms, one of which was an RP forum, which you all know was ROER2. I had help with a friend, LancerZero, who helped managed the board with me, creating storylines, beautiful characters and managing the place whilst I worked on maintaining board structure and integrity, and of couse this place. Sadly Lancer disappeared from the internet and ROER2 quietly died shortly after. There were attempts to revive the board, but they never really lasted that long. During that downtime, I started developing an idea for a story that was very loosely inspired by the RP board's main campaign, and featuring several characters from that board, all used with permission from Lancerzero and another user, Eudemic. The story I came up with was called Final Fantasy IX - Chronicles of Gaia.
Set twenty years after the events of Final Fantasy 9, it chronicles the adventures of Declan, who finds himself drawn into an investigation of several undead attacks staged by a shadowy necromancer named Vix Arkelith, after Burmecia is subjected to one of these attacks. In order to diffuse the undead uprising and keep the peace within an already shakey alliance between Burmecia, Lindblum and Alexandria, Declan joins with several dysfunctional adventurers like himself in order to root out the cause, bring Vix to justice and restore peace to the Mist Continent. However, as typical of Final Fantasy, things are not always what they seem, and Declan soon finds himself in the middle of a bigger, more sinister plot that he may or may not already be involved in.
That's all I'm going to say about the plot. I don't want to reveal too much, in case I end up spoiling much of the core story. Some of you might remember some of this, because I already posted an older (now defunct) version of the story back in 2010. I wasn't really happy with the direction it was going, so I scrapped it and started again from scratch. Another version came out in 2013, but like that one, there was no real direction it was going, and it too was sent to the scrap pile.
So this is version three of Chronicles that I'm now working on. I now have a good idea on which direction to take the story and how to open it - the two biggest hurdles that led to all those false starts. A prologue has already been written out, and I'm already working on the first chapter as of writing. No ETA on when it'll be released, so for now I've marked the release date as "When it's Done".
The prologue can be viewed here on Google Docs: docs.google.com/document/d/1fm1RRYicMz5FwVXsD3pctwZiEzRd4EqtROIdorOAi_Y/edit?usp=sharing
And for those interested, my friend did an audio version of the Prologue if anyone wants to listen: soundcloud.com/sweetwolf-1/prologue-final-fantasy-ix-chronicles-of-gaia-by-smaug-spoken-by-sweet-wolf/s-Zsb08
Again, I would like to thank you guys for your patience whilst I'm working on all these projects simultaneously and clearing my plate one bit at a time. I'm sorry for not giving ROER the care and attention it deserves - both the site and this story have been dream projects of mine, the latter of which I'm hoping to make into a reality one day. At least, with this version of course.
I just need you all to bear with me a little bit longer. That's all.
