Worldbuilding is an essential part of any work of fiction. But for stories set in a sience fiction or fantasy setting, it is the lifeblood of storytelling and the Final Fantasy series is no exception. Final Fantasy IX is notable for it's extensive lore and worldbuilding, moreso than other entries in the series. However, there is one area of the game that I feel this worldbuild aspect has been barely touched upon - Burmecia. The game has given us snippets of what Burmecia is like, and while the Realm of Eternal Rain has tried to expand on that lore, the game itself does not go into the same detail as it did with Lindblum, Alexandria and even Terra.
This is where the Realm of Eternal Rain community comes in. The goal of this project is to build and expand on currently existing Burmecian and Cleyran lore, fleshing out currently existing information and filling in the gaps that the game forgot, left out, or merely hinted at. Because of the extensive nature of this project, one person cannot do this alone - we are looking for writers who can help us expand on Burmecia's lore and history, it's climate and geography, the people who live there, lifestyles and customs, and anything else in between.
Before you start sending in any essays, please consider some basic ground rules:
Try to keep a plausable tone in your essays. Think about basic infrastructure, why events happened the way they did, etc. Even in a fantasy setting, you are still writing as if it were a real location, so try to make your essays believable. If possible, cite any real-world and historical examples for your writings.
Keep in mind the general level of technology present in FFIX. Neither Burmecia nor Cleyra are nowhere near as advanced as either Alexandria or Lindblum. (For reference, Alexandria is typical fantasy, while Lindblum is heavily influenced by the steampunk setting.)
Try to make your essays as clear, concise, and to the point. While we would like some essays based on Burmecia's origins, it's choice of architecture and the details of the civil war with cleyra (for example), please don't write about what Burmecian Soldier Gray's great, great grandfather had for breakfast unless it's historically important.
And please, no in-depth essays about Burmecian mating habits! For the sake of simplicity - and everyone's sanity - we're going to assume that they do it like humans do and leave it at that.
If you have any works you would like to submit to the worldbuilding project, please feel free to post them here in the Burmecian Lore Library forum, or post them to me using the Submissions link on the site itself. I'm looking forward to whatever crazy or interesting theories you guys can come up with.
Have fun!
