Gah! My computer has some kind of virus on it which disallows it to start up properly, it reboots over and over again until you hold down the power button which shuts it down. I'm currently on a computer in my library, but I have no idea when I'll be able to go back on my computer, we might even have to get a new one, which would be nice, seeing as I need better graphics and RAM for my Sims 2 game. Luckily if the person who is gonna look at the computer has to do a wipe we've backed it up on an external harddrive at 160 GB, which was rebacked up around 2 weeks ago, which means all my FFIX stuff and SUPAs stuff is safe. I can't remember which pictures I put on there since 2 weeks ago except for the piccies and videos from last Sunday that I was gonna upload T-T
So, just saying, there won't be any new SUPA chapter from me in a while, I'm afraid. Thinking about losing any new art or stuff that I've done over the last two weeks made me cry yesterday....

Computer viruses are pure evil.
I'm sorry to hear that Mel. I hope you can get your computer fixed up, or at least get some form of internet access sorted out.
Incidentally, have you tried holding F8 and setting it from "Start Windows Normally" to "Debugging Mode" or something similar? I know I have to do that on my home computer. If that doesn't work then I don't know what to suggest.
And please try not to cry. We can't have our happiest and hyper member shedding tears...
*Offers hug*
Also, do you mind if I start drawing the SUPAs whilst you're gone? I am doing next month's edition after all.

You could try booting up in safe mode? I don't know...maybe restoring your computer to an earlier date might help if you can keep it on long enough (not a clue if its possible in safe mode), i suck at computer stuff T_T but there might be a way to save your things, i know how you feel i'd be the same too *hugs*
Mine was retstaring itself not long back after my zone labs firewall thingy was out of date, uninstalled and my comp was fine...i'd say maybe if you can remove things you dont need? but like i said i'm so crap with 60% of computer stuff :s

Get HijackThis on a floppy disk. Boot in safe mode. Run HijackThis and save the log. Post the log here, and ill see what i can decypher.
Does it get to the windows splash screen? If it dosent, you could have a problem with your MBR, your hard drive, or both. What version of windows is it?
You dont, by chance, download alot of sh*t do you?

It gets to the splash screen, then gets to the blue background (this 2000 package btw) as if it's about to start saying "loading personal settings" then it reboots again. I've tried all the options on the F8 mode, and not even safe mode works. I haven't downloaded anything except for legal things.
Rob: I don't mind if you start drawing your chapter, I'll send you a note about SUPA stuff.
Master Shake: Where abouts can I find this HijackThis?

Wow, that sounds pretty nasty. Your OS is a little unclear, though . . . do you mean you have Windows ME (Millenium Edition), Windows 2000, or what? I ask because ME and 2000 are VERY different beasts. =P You can get HijackThis here. Also, if Gunny is unable to figure it out, you might try asking on www.techforums.net - those guys have saved my butt a couple of times when I couldn't figure out what was happening. I may be able to help, too, if you can give more details. What exactly happens? It reboots just as if you'd pressed ctrl+alt+del? And it does this exact same thing, at the exact same time in the startup sequence, regardless of which startup option you choose? And your files are not necessarily lost - if you use a Linux bootable CD, you'll be able to access your Windows drive without getting into Windows at all, and that'll give you the chance to backup all your art to a USB flash drive! ^^ Personally, I recommend Ubuntu - you may have heard of it - for its ease of use and wide hardware support. I've got it installed as a second operating system on my computer, and on my little sister's old 400MHz Dell Optiplex as the sole operating system. You can even request them to send you a free CD, but it takes much longer than downloading. If you have a friend that'd let you download it and burn it onto a CD, you shouldn't have any trouble at all. EDIT: And like I said, best thing about it is that it's not JUST an installation CD; you don't have to install it to use it. You just pop it in the CD drive as you're restarting (or before, of course), and it'll boot up right into it (assuming your computer supports boot-from-CD, as most nowadays do), thus bypassing Windows completely.

You *may* have to rearrange your boot order in your BIOS setup to boot from CD, depending on what computer you use. I know i used to have to do that on a few of my old machines.

I'd forgotten, but I definitely have had to do that on older machines as well - if you try it and it doesn't boot from CD, Mel, please let us know and we'll have some more questions so we can determine your BIOS and help you alter it so it'll boot from CD.

*reads all the high-tech questions*.....Er... well it's Windows 2000, and Lancer, I've given all the details on what it does : it goes to the blue screen as if it's about to say "Loading personal settings" then it goes black and reboots.
I'm not sure what the specs are.
My dad rang a computer guy yesterday and he says it's either a virus or the hard drive's on it's way out. To be honest, I'm leaning towards the dying hard drive theory, as the hard drive is quite old; not sure exactly but we've had it for at least 4-5 years, and it was from a friend, so it's a lot older. My mum is going to take the processor in to the IT technician art her school tomorrow so fingers crossed he'll find what's wrong with it.

You could always slave your questionable hard drive to a working machine and chkdsk for bad sectors. its not all that complicated, just some jumper switching.

And a diagram of the jumper configuration is often etched into the hard drive's casing, making it easier. Failing that, you can take the model number and look up the jumper configuration on the internet in the library. I've had to do that before, you'll probably be able to find it pretty easily.

Most hard drives (except Maxtor im pretty sure, some others too) have 3 sets of 2 pins. When you are looking at the PCB side it usually goes in order from left to right: Master, Slave, Cable Select.
