Since there seem to be a few keen "Magic The Gathering" players here on ROER, and that the discussion in CIT went really well, I've decided this deserves it's own topic. You can discuss cards, decks, strategies and combos and tournament stuff in here.
I'll start and ask once again if anyone went to the Shadowmoor pre-release event.
Edit: Wow, not a single post...Okay, is anyone heading to a Shadowmoor release event this weekend? I'm going to one in Edinburgh on Saturday.

Nah, I didn't even know about it. According to my brother, the elves are pretty sick, so I figure it might be a good set. Then again, I've been displeased with the sets WOTC have been making; once Kamigwa came out, they went downhill. That's not to say that there haven't been good cards, but not enough.
I suppose I should take the good with the bad... or get rid of the bad and keep the good. =p

Shame to hear that, but I don't think the sets after Kamiwaga have been all bad. I liked the Time Spiral block, and Future Sight has some awesome rares. Then again, I don't know that much about earlier sets, since I started playing Magic with Time Spiral decks...
From what I've seen of the Shadowmoor set, it has some great cards, and there isn't a focus on tribes any more, which I didn't really like in the Lorwyn set.

Well yeah, I can understand you using more recent sets. I have to take into consideration that my dad has been playing since MTG was first released.
Have you seen someone pull an excellet play/combo? Like for example, my brother attacked me with two creatures; a 1/1 and a 0/1. Naturally, I blocked the 1/1 and allowed the 0.1 to go through. Fatal mistake, as he then put on a giant growth, and used some ability with his elves (there were several, actually, I just can't remember all of them). Long story shory, I went from 20 life to 0 in one turn.

Just recently I managed to one-turn kill an Elf deck with my Saproling deck.
I had a Savage Thallid enchanted with Verdant Embrace that had generated a few saprolings over the past few turns. I had two other creatures as well, facing an army of Elfs which were generating 3/3 elf tokens (1/1 elf tokens pumped up with other elf effects) at an alarming rate.
I used Might of Old Krosa on Savage Thallid, giving it +7/+7 along with Verdant embrace. I then enchanted it with Fallen Ideal, which gives it flying and allows me to sacrifice creatures to give it +2/+1 each time. I sacrificed all my saprolings and creatures and hit him with a 20/13 flier that he couldn't block, as his only flier was currently tapped after attacking me.

You want to know what hurts more than being taken out with a creature? Being taken out with a sorcery.
For instance, I played a green deck, and had about 14 life left. So, my brother has 2 Megrims out, and uses Persecute on me, choosing green. Well, needless to say, I was out rather quickly.

You lost because you were forced into being Hellbent? If you're in a decent position anyway, losing your hand isn't that bad, although very annoying if you lost some useful cards.
I got to use what I consider a more powerful version of Persecute, Tyrannize, in a draft. Having the opponent choose between losing their hand or paying 7 life is quite a satisfyingly evil play.
Death by sorcery is painful, and playing Burn decks can be very difficult. Especially if you're using Slivers, I find.

Slivers make, in my opinon, one of the best decks to play. Simply because they power up each other through abilities.
However, one good countermeasure to play is a certain sliver card (I believe it is blue) which gives all slivers in play "defender." Three of us played that card, and my dad got pissed. Incidentally, I almost won that game, but he used Jokalhaupes. I cried. xD

I know someone who thinks that's great to use in a Sliver Deck, use it to draw the cards you need then sacrifice it with another Sliver effect. It would annoy me though, since I'd have no way of getting rid of it. Plague Sliver is a more lethal counter against Sliver decks. Although if you combined it with Purity you could put it in a Sliver deck and get a huge benefit from it.

I play Slivers. I'm a former control deck player who went Tribal...
There have been many times when I would sit down and pull out the deck box, and have people stand up and leave. Sliver Queen, Intruder Alarm, and Gemhide Sliver.
"I play my entire hand this turn... Everything has haste, double strike, poison counters, unblockable except for slivers... oh, and there are another 50 sliver tokens in play, I swing at everyone."

Ah Sliver Queen, I want that card and Sliver Overlord...For now, I have to settle with Sliver Legion, which is powerful enough.
I had a pretty big disappointment today, I rushed to get to a local game shop I know for a Magic Fat pack challenge tournament only to find no other magic players had turned up, so it was called off. I just decided to buy some boosters and head back feeling gutted.

Damn dude, that sucks.
Funny experience last weekend: My father, brother, and myself were playing a game. My father casts a fireball at me, I counter it, he counters that, and finally my brother counters that counter. Whoo boy, so many counterspells in one turn >_>
I ended up winning, only because I was able to get out all my good Aven, and my father and brother were duking it out the entire game. So, my father fell, and I swooped in. Birds for the win =D

I take it you guys were playing blue? Blue counter decks can be really annoying. That sounds really crazy though, 4 counter is one turn!? I know one friend of mine has a deck that uses a combo of a blue counter spell and an artifact that attaches to the counter spell and allows him to re-use it for 2 mana once each turn. It's really annoying to play against since he counters everything once he sets it up. You have you play two spells in your turn at least if you want to play something!
